Thookam literally means to hang on, involves hanging over the thookkakaran or the man who performs.Thookam on to the cart cart like vehicle, in a flying position using hooks.He will carry a child in his hangs.The cart will be pulled around the temple to make a pradashinam by the devotees.


After worshiping the goddess the performers gets over a two wheeled platform over which is the pillar like Utholaksm.There is a hook at one end of the utholakam to which is attached the backside skin of the dancer. This end is then raised up in the air almost horizontally in which posture he executes certain physical feats and dancemovements and the whole platform is taken round the temple deity.

Thookam is more popular in the areas of south kerala & eranakulam districts.Usually the festival is held in the month of February - march.

Thookam is a temple ritual and offering held at Bhagavathi temples.Thookam is performed for the good health and well being of children or to get children who does not have them.
